RIP or Life Support for webOS?

HP’s press release states that they have discontinued hardware operations.  Do you think webOS is now completely dead or can it come back from the ashes like a phoenix?

Not clear - but, boy, does HP look like a bunch of geeks here. Granted, they got Palm at a bargain price, and, granted, that was when they had at least a semblance of a management team, but this is their Flip Phone moment. The hardware is dead and few will miss it, but I'd assume someone will want this promising piece of software, and, again we'll be talking bargain price, so maybe. Are we really ready to settle for an iOS/Android duopoly with QNX/WP7 as the comic relief? Gee, I hope not...

I just don't see how webOS can come back in its current form to any vendor.  Perhaps some of the cards metaphors, etc...but it's clear that Palm had a great vision, and horrible execution.  HP had neither vision, nor the ability to execute.

Sorry - should have been "Flip Camera" moment... Freudian slip.

At this point, it doesn't matter what HP wants to do. They are in serious damage control mode (Meg Whitman? Really? Wow!) and must focus on they key revenue-generating products lines. Mobility should be one of those, but it's not, so off they go. All this in no way, however, lessens the potential value of webOS. How about a consortium of vendors taking on webOS as the anti-Android? Wouldn't it be nice to be free of advertising company/spy firm Google with a product that's just as good, if not better? And with Google buying Motorola, does anyone believe that Moto won't get most-favored-nation status WRT future Android releases, Eric Schmidt's protestations to the contrary notwithstanding?

Imagine - webOS as #1. OK, probability of less than .5 here, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Thx. Craig.

My hope is that Amazon acquires webOS.
