With all due respect to the people there, I'm not sure I would consider Gartner as THE definitive source on MDM

According to Gartner:
Mobile device management (MDM) includes software that provides the following functions: software distribution, policy management, inventory management, security management and service management for smartphones and media tablets.
What I have gathered, when people use the term MDM, they are referring more to the actual platform and tool (offered by mobility solution companies) than the actual management approach.
