If it works out well and GOOG starts to get some hardware-software-services collaboration happening inside the combined entity, we may see services and applications launching in concert with purpose-built devices and working from day 1 as intended a la AAPL. I think Google underestimated the need for being an ecosystem player in order to make Android successful, and this is a step toward acknowledging that and making Android a worthy competitor to iOS.

I make the Apple comparison but one could also look at early 2000s RIM as a company that nailed this synergy. Devices, services and software all iterated in sync (with a few exceptions) to give a new service or piece of software alongside a device capable of delivering it, though their backward-compatible support sometimes left users frustrated by the experience. I think this heritage is why the shortfall on table stakes Playbook features like native email were such a shocker to people following the company.
