Very nice summary of recent developments! What interests me (among other things) is whether the combination of these developments can be seen as “stepping on the gas” in speeding up the emergence of the post-PC era. HP is veering away from PC business too– is that a sign of acknowledgment of erosion of the PC [...]

Both perspectives make sense to me, and cast light on the question of why exactly GOOG might have wanted to buy MMI in the first place. If patents were the main attraction (as is made out to be, in the press), surely it was not just a reaction to losing out to Rockstar Bidco on [...]

ps: the relative rankings of these four platforms in terms of market share will keep changing over the next few years. The question I have (with regard to smartphone/smartpad platforms) is from the device makers’ perspective: among the top three device manufacturers, Nokia has married into the Windows family while Motorola has sold itself to [...]

The use of patent trolling as an extortoinist weapon in the mobility space, to me, invites interesting parallels with nuclear proliferation among superpowers. All it takes is one indiscreet idiot misusing it, and all others are alarmed into perceiving its importance as a weapon and going about stockpiling frantically. Ultimately the world reconciles to preferring [...]

The mutual gravitation of mobile device makers and *smartphone* platform makers started a few years ago, and is still running its course. Over two years ago, Samsung had many, many phones running Symbian. In mid-2008, Nokia announced acquisition of the remaining 52% stake in Symbian that it did not already own. The move was said [...]

I did not know about the MSFT-Nortel deal covering Linux issues. What then is the basis of MSFT’s patent fee claims against Android device makers? At any rate, I found the title of this blog (How Patent Law Could Radically Change The Mobile Landscape) a trifle misleading. We are discussing the implications of te recent [...]

At the kernel (pun intended) of MSFT’s claims to fees from Android device makers is the original allegation that the Linux kernel infringes on MSFT’s patents. If there was any solid legitimacy to those allegations, don’t you think Linux would have been consigned to oblivion long time ago? Expect fight and resistance, not acquiescence, from [...]

Is there any substance to the rumour that RIM is seriously considering enabling their Blackberry smartphones to run Android apps?

I’ll be interested to discuss the consequences and implications as you perceive them.

True, the focus should be on driving. The premise of my discussion is that countless people still use their phones while they drive. And that if they can operate the phones without compromising safety on the roads, it is useful for them to have a mobile phone at hand while driving. The legislation in countries [...]

Long time no see, everyone! This post goes towards keeping the airwaves active on this group. Enterprise mobility contributes greatly towards “ubiquitous computing” among enterprise users. A keypart of the ubiquity requirement is computing while driving– while at the wheel! What are the functions that a driver typically performs, or wishes to perform, while at [...]

Are there data available on how the Windows phone is doing in the enterprise market– sales data and/or qualitative reports on rate of adoption among enterprise users? How is the WP doing vis-a-vis Blackberry or Android? Purely from an enterprise use perspective, are there any compelling reasons to use WP rather than Blackberry or Android?

Greetings! I wish to focus attention on Point#2 in the inaugural posting in this group: 2. what functions of the mobile device would the enterprise user want to, or wish to, perform hands-free? What functions would make sense for the (enterprise) mobile device/platform manufacturers to make available hands-free? To organize thinking about this question, let [...]
