Hey, check that Facebook valuation again… but this isn’t really about market caps. But it is most certainly about jobs, although not necessarily about jobs at social-media suppliers. You are confusing activity with progress; social media may indeed breed new jobs, but my argument is that such is at the expense of the productivity of [...]

You mean residential broadband in general? Of course not. But, last time I checked (I’m a FiOS customer now), Comcast gave customers 250 GB/month before they got terribly concerned. I don’t know what the limit is with FiOS, but I don’t think I ever use more than about 150 GB/month. But my argument applies here [...]

The recent news from AT&T about the end of unlimited wireless data came as no surprise, but still raised my hackles more than a bit. Sure, only Sprint still offers unlimited data, but on a more limited network (in terms of coverage and capacity, anyway, along with a still-shaky corporate image). OK, let’s be fair: the [...] -

You can see one of those here: http://www.informationweek.com/news/telecom/collaboration/232500086?ct=1022&at=validate&actionType=stubby. No surprise; the field is in its infancy now. Future Facebook will likely have a lot more features – how about instant teleconference/videoconference, camera sharing, etc. etc. All of these features will show up in enterprise information systems as well. If Facebook is smart, they have already [...]

Who was it that said that life is full of contradictions? Today’s topic is indeed one of those, at least at first glance. I’m a guy who doesn’t have a Facebook account. I do have a Twitter account, but I don’t use it. I’m on Linkedin because I thought it might be a good idea to have [...] -

‘Tis the season of wonder and wishing, after all, so here goes. At the top of my wish list for wireless has always been having not just one, but rather multiple electromagnetic spectra, kind of like having more channels, but in a very big way. Since we’re going to have to wait for the next edition of [...] -

I’ve had the privilege of Chairing the Wireless and Mobility Track at the Interop conferences for some time now. Interop Spring, held in Las Vegas, is the largest enterprise IT event in the world, and the New York event, Interop Fall, while smaller, is in no way less intense than its big brother. In planning the Wireless [...] -

As one of the participants in the above-noted debate, I want to go on the record as to how I think all of this will unfold. To mimic Philippe’s style here: – Enterprises are mobilizing key staff because there is economic advantage in so doing (enterprise are nothing if not creatures of economics). – The [...]

I thought about that option, but it probably wouldn’t work in the short run – the stock would tank, since the handset business would be a writeoff – I don’t think anyone would buy it at this point. So the goal must be to build a handset that can compete with iPhone and Android, and [...]

Ditto. I keep the iPad 1 on my desk for calendar and CNBC feeds. I’m getting an iPad 2 to put under the couch for quick searches while watching TV. Most iPads are used for gaming and media consumption. No surprise there. I stand by my initial comment (posted in my blog at Network World) [...]

Agreed. I have about 25 PCs and related devices, about half of which are mobile. But how many can you carry simultaneously? I’m not going to carry a notebook and a tablet; my bag is already overstuffed. How about we virtualize the tablet (you pick which one, and hire the requisite attorneys) to run on [...]

Don’t underestimate Ubuntu. It’s free, fast, easy to use, reliable, and I’ve yet to find a serious bug – and I’ve been using Ubuntu since release 7. It’s a great way to extend the life of older PCs, vastly superior to anything Microsoft has ever produced, and very, very functional even for non-computer types. That [...]

Craig Mathias from Farpoint Group commented on the blog post Does the OS (Mobile or Otherwise) Still Matter? · View
As with Philippe, I think the answer here depends upon what the definition of “mobile virtualization” is. For example, mine is a complete virtualization of the device. I am assuming that the future holds essentially continuous wireless connectivity, over both WLAN and WWAN, and perhaps WPAN in some cases, so there’s a reduced need for [...]

RIM, the maker of the popular (well, historically, anyway; read on) BlackBerry line of products, and one of the firms that essentially defined mobility as we know it today, has been all over the financial news for months. The company’s stock has fallen dramatically (it was around 145 only a little more than a year ago, [...] -

Tablet, tablet, iPad, tablet, and more tablet. That’s all you hear these days. People wait for the next iPad like it’s, well, the third coming, breath baited, credit cards primed, practically slobbering over the fine Corinthian aluminum. Man, I just love Apple’s marketing – the best in the world, the best ever in fact. They could, [...] -

Security should be independent of the OS. And if an OS isn’t secure, by definition it’s not competitive (unless it comes from Microsoft, although that’s changing, and quickly). OSes do not win and die based on the number of apps available. At best that’s a temporary phenomenon, since most users will never see or need [...]

You are certainly right about security. Good discussions of the security of iCloud, for example, are few and far between. I’m in the process of moving much of Farpoint Group’s IT infrastructure into the cloud, but this could take some time due to the need for the rigorous evaluation of security concerns before anything mission-critical [...]

I was watching one of the business TV channels recently, and a guest expressed the opinion that RIM’s (BlackBerry) current problems stem largely from the lack of a contemporary and competitive operating system. OK, my views on RIM are on record – they’re going to survive and can even prosper in the future, sustained by their [...] -

The Interop conferences, held twice a year in Las Vegas and New York, are the largest end-user IT events in the world, and, while the name implies networks, we really cover all of the key issues in IT. I don’t think carriers will be too interested in assuming the role of traffic cop or in enforcing corporate security or acceptable-use policies; the liability for them is just too great. Some carriers, though, will provide mobile device management services that may have some of these features. Overall, I’d say the trend is toward personal [...]
