The title says it all. I for one, think its simplicity screams elegance.

Once someone gives me an actual device running WP7, I’ll be able to better comment on its UI…Any charitable donations?

  • Avatar Image Philippe Winthrop said 2 years, 10 months ago:

LOL. But I’m sure you’ve seen a ton of screenshots and videos. What’s your take?

  • Avatar Image Colin Best said 2 years, 10 months ago:

The UI has grown on me actually. I like the simplicity but I feel like it may be easy to get lost in (i.e. too many layers). I also like how they’ve integrated a social component into the OS. With all that being said, the true test will be when I get to play around with it myself with a phone that is actually intended to run on it.

    What does everyone else think?

In regards to Enterprise Mobility (I believe that was the original subject of this discussion ??):

My understanding is that they are focused heavily on consumer side now and proper Enterprise support (Exchange/etc) is planned for much much later – 2011/2012… by which time IMHO all organizations will adopt iPhone as a standard for “white collar” workers ;)

As far as LOB (Line Of Business) applications, involving barcode scanning etc (like what I do in my day job) the official word from Microsoft is the “classic” WM/CE, now re-branded as “Windows Embedded Handheld”, see: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2010/jun10/06-17enterprisehandheld.mspx

I am not sure at all whether MS will succeed in consumer space, but by focusing on it only they risk loosing the Enterpise forever!!

Can’t agree more with your last statement Oleg. As a large WinMo enterprise customer I feel let down by Redmond’s decision making process around P7. Only time will tell…

What’s disappointed you? Do you think they could have somehow kept backwards compatibility all the while modernizing the experience? I understand how such a reset can be difficult, but I can’t help but feel that sometimes you just have to take such draconian measures.

The distinction between ‘consumer space’ and ‘enterprise space’ is becoming more blurred. A mobile OS like WP7 can have all the enterprise features and support an IT manager can ask for but if it fails to appeal to the consumer (employee), it will never make its way into the enterprise to begin with.

I think we are soon going to be at the point where consumer vs. enterprise will be a completely moot point. This is actually what I like about MSFT’s approach with WP7.

So Windows Phone 7 is now official. Have you tried it? I bought one for my tech-phobic mom…and she likes it a lot.

  • Avatar Image Colin Best said 2 years, 6 months ago:

I am still waiting to get my hands on one. I’ve read some very positive things about the user experience though. Perhaps my mother would enjoy one as well, considering she is as tech-phobic as they come!

Now mind you, it’s not a perfect implementation thus far. For example, it wants you to input your Live ID. That’s fine because she uses Hotmail….but her contacts are ALL messed up in Hotmail…which means all her contacts are now messed up on her phone. I haven’t found a way (yet) to prevent the contact syncing and cleaning up the 2,000 bogus contacts she has is a massive pain in the neck.
BTW – allegedly an update is coming out real soon http://bit.ly/dkMCrb
