Rather than figure out which devices are "best", it would be helpful if enterprise software companies kept a matrix of hardware and OS versions supported. That way, customers could simply download the matrices, figure out which devices would be best supported, and settle on those either in a BYOD or COPE setting.

But the only real carrots and sticks that companies have to enforce these policies are network access and reimbursement. I'm surprised how often these are NOT actively enforced through policies or how easy it can be to work around the mobile policy's guidelines. Now that mobile is a layer, it has to be treated as a grown-up enterprise technology rather simply allowing it to be treated as a herd of cats dragged off the street.

Philippe... (great post by the way)

One of the burning issues with COPE or most BYOD programs that never seems to get much traction is - APPS; not any APP but business enabled APPS. SAP for instance has 200+ apps ready and geared for IOS devices. So we if just allow "any" device like a Nokia Lumina, Blackberry 10 or some off-the-wall Android, good luck, SAP apps won't work.

So until we get to HTML5 nirvana where any app will run in any HTML5 enabled browser we all need to be a little careful here.

If IOS is your corporate preferred platform then indeed, you can allow employee owned or enabled IOS devices but not any device or smartphone. If all you do (mobile) is email/calendar then of course COPE is a great concept. But my guess is that many large enterprises that have partnerships with the likes of SAP have to ensure that corporate sponsored business applications do indeed run on the device provided or enabled. Small nuance but an important one.

Right now its difficult, but I think that if users sit down and spend a little time on re-working their collaborative processes, they will find that mobile collaboration doesn't have to be awkward. Perhaps protocols for project preparation that involve which files might need to be moved to the cloud for the project, how long they can stay there, and what kind of encryptions need to be added to the file. Users already use similar methods for emailing files for collaboration which is definitely part of the current collaborative architecture. Modification of those kinds of policies could drastically improve the way we utilize mobile computing.

The trade show circuit, love it or hate it, but it pays the bills, non? Philippe I missed the part about Rudy ;-) but I was surprised to see the low numbers on successful B2C Mobile App Projects.

I would have thought it was higher especially after the comScore and Alexa surveys that said "people prefer mobile apps over mobile websites".

Maybe that's due to poor promotion or applying the Field of Dreams "build it and they will come" theory. Either way that number needs to improve or Mobile Apps will become just another passing fad.

Your point of having a Mobile Vision is critical and that's why we focus our customers on crystallizing their vision to manage expectations when implementing Mobile Apps into an overall Marketing or Mobile Marketing Strategy.

Philippe,

Looks like there's a typo in your article, when you say BB World 2010? Just below your tweet quote?

Wish this article carried a bit more info about Black Berry 10.

I am inclined to agree with your assessment on being addicted to lots of room on the screen. However, its not just that we are addicted to the big screens (I personally am a big fan of the dual monitor solution), but the multi tasking abilities that come along with having multiple screens. Having been a simple administrative aide in the past, I can tell you that there were aspects of my job that were nearly impossible with out being able to see multiple windows at once. Until they optimize my ability to see more than one application at a time on a mobile device or make it easier for mobile apps to pull in the information I need from other applications, mobile will not be optimized for industry.

I was able to sit in on your session but unfortunately had conflicts with other meetings and couldn't stay for the Q&A portion.

One of the things I wanted to bring up (in the context of BYOD, consumerization of IT) that doesn't get discussed in employee privacy and compensation.

These are two big issues that are not being solved and are often a sticking point that prevents employees from embracing BYOD. From running our BYOD program it's been cost neutral. Mostly due to we do not provide stipend. The biggest reasons employees do not participate in our BYOD program is the fear of company having oversight of what they do on their device. I'm sure some companies have a more open policy but we have regulatory obligations where some functionality will be limited, you also have legal discovery concerns that once an employee reads and understands they just walk away and continue to have their work and personal life seperate.

I prefer this model myself as why would I want the added expense for data roaming, wear on my device(s) and restrictions applied to my devices? I'd much rather have a dedicated company paid device that is for work.

The big draw of BYOD is having one device but time after time people are choosing privacy over this convenience.

Another aspect is many of the BYOD issues need better direction for HR as it regards to employee compensation and when am I working and when am I doing something on my own accord. If I answer email after hours should I be paid for that? It's easy if your have all salary employees but many corporations have sizable hourly employees and this is a big issue. Perhaps we will see some defined employment around this but I've heard from many smaller businesses that struggle with employees that are not productive as they are constantly on their smartphone doing obviously nothing business related and that is the main BYOD driver, employees want to keep twittering, facebooking, angry bird playing.

The pursuit of leisure is outweighing the desire to be productive.

You bring in a very important point, The IT can not force the mobile device users to use IT apps of the past. So this is still about user experience and not just getting the enterprise data/app somehow on the device.

Apart from the cost of COPE, i dont see any other issue in this approach
